The Boring Company has just started selling a fragrance in what appears to be Elon Musk’s latest cash grab.
The fragrance is dubbed Burnt Hair and according to Musk, is an “omnigender product.” It comes in a flashy red glass bottle but given that deliveries won’t start until the first quarter of 2023, it is unclear if it will actually smell like burnt hair, or perhaps something more pleasant.
Taking to Twitter to announce the product, Musk said that Doge coins can be used to purchase the perfume and quickly confirmed that within hours of launching the fragrance, 10,000 bottles of it had been sold, rising that number to 20,000 bottles within a few hours. With each costing $100, that represents a cool $2 million in revenue for The Boring Company.

This is far from Elon Musk’s only unusual piece of merchandise he has launched in recent years. In mid-2020, Tesla started selling branded red satin shorts for $69.420 each. Soon after, Tesla released its own $250 tequila, appropriately dubbed ‘Teslaquilla.’ In 2018, The Boring Company sold 20,000 flamethrowers for $500 each and that same year, Tesla sold 200 surfboards for $1,500 a pop.
It seems unlikely that The Boring Company itself will actually manufacture the Burnt Hair fragrance and instead, have an experienced company bring it to life. Of course, that won’t bother Musk’s loyal followers and it seems inevitable that the first bottles will quickly be resold at exorbitant prices once shipments start next year.
