Peugeot’s full-electric 3008 and 5008 SUVs will have up to 700 km range

PARIS — Peugeot will launch the next generation 3008 compact SUV as a primarily battery-electric vehicle in the second half. It will be the first model on Stellantis’ STLA Medium platform.

The 3008 will be followed by a new version of the 5008 midsize SUV, which Peugeot had not previously announced, although no launch date was given. 

Jerome Micheron, global product director, said Thursday at the brand’s “E-Lion” event that the 3008 and 5008 are designed to be full-electric vehicles but will have combustion-engine drivetrains available in some markets. 

In the online event, CEO Linda Jackson and Micheron detailed Peugeot’s transition to becoming an electric-only brand in Europe by 2030.

Jackson said Peugeot is committed to offering a full-electric version of every vehicle in its European lineup, and would launch five new full-electric vehicles by 2025: The e-308 compact hatchback and station wagon this year, the e-408 compact fastback, and the 3008/5008.

The brand will sell only full-electric vehicles in Europe “as soon as 2030,” she said.

Peugeot’s current full-electric vehicles include the e-208 small hatchback, the e-2008 small SUV, and two passenger vans — the Rifter and Traveller.

The 3008 will be available with three full-electric drivetrains, including a dual-motor all-wheel drive version. No details on the 5008 were revealed.

Peugeot released an image of a seven-vehicle full-electric lineup; although no details were given on specific models, Jackson acknowledged that the silhouettes reflected actual models. The design of those models will be influenced by the Inception concept revealed in January at the CES show in Las Vegas. 

Vehicles on the STLA Medium platform will have up to 700 km (434 miles) range, and have batteries of 87 to 104 kilowatt-hours.

Stellantis has described the platform as “BEV by design,” but it can also accept internal combustion-based engines.

The current 3008 and 5008 were launched in 2016 and 2017 respectively, and have been best sellers for Peugeot. Both models were formerly minivans but were repositioned in the growing SUV/crossover segments. The 3008 is available as a plug-in hybrid as well as with nonhybrid gasoline and diesel engines; the 5008 has no hybrid option.

The 3008 was sixth in the compact SUV segment in Europe in 2022 with 100,835 sales, according to figures from Dataforce; the 5008 was sixth in the midsize/large SUV segment, with 36,187 sales. Both models saw declines of more than 25 percent as shipping and logistics issues affected deliveries of Stellantis brands toward the end of 2022.

48-volt mild hybrid system

Peugeot is also launching a 48-volt mild hybrid drivetrain in 2023 that will allow up to 50 percent zero emission urban driving, Micheron said. It will also cut emissions by 15 percent, he added.

Micheron said the 48-volt drivetrain would be rolled out “quickly” across every passenger car model in the brand’s lineup. The system includes a 100 or 136 hp gasoline engine coupled to a six-speed dual clutch gearbox that incorporates a 21-kilowatt electric motor.

Looking further ahead, Jackson and Micheron said Peugeot was preparing a complete overhaul of its cockpit human-machine interface, or HMI, including an electronic “steer by wire” system that will appear starting in 2026. 

The new interface will take advantage of three Stellantis technology platforms: STLA Brain, a central computing system with over the air updates; STLA SmartCockpit infotainment; and STLA Autodrive, for autonomous driving.

Jackson and Phil York, Peugeot marketing director, said the brand is also taking steps to address the affordability of electric vehicles, although there are no plans to offer a minicar EV that would succeed the now-discontinued 108 model. Peugeot is launching two different payment plans for full-electric cars:

• A “pay as you go” program based on monthly mileage use: An e-208 would start at 150 euros a month for 500 km, with each additional kilometer costing seven cents. The plan could be rolled for other models, York said.
• Peugeot Your Way: A monthly payment covers the lease cost servicing and maintenance, insurance and charging. No further details were given.
